Appropriate
Appropriate by Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and directed by Dr. Steve Burch.
The role of Toni Lafayette was played by Faculty Member Allison Hetzel.
Toni is the oldest sibling, a former school principal, is used to dealing with others’ children and family conflicts but not her own. Around her family, she can turn into a bit of a bully. She is accustomed to being in charge, and she is losing her grip--mostly because she is overwhelmed and tired and doesn’t recognize it. However, she is a compassionate person with a good sense of humor who is dealing with some very difficult emotional issues. Smart, tough-spirited, pretty grounded. I was able to relate to this role as an older sister with two younger brothers--I often tend to take charge of family matters and often find thees experiences exhausting. My approach to the role involved detailed text and character analysis along with finding my vocal and physical-life. In-depth character discussions with my director and colleague Dr. Steve Burch also helped me shape and this multi-faceted role. Toni was a joy to play as I was able to discover more about her in every rehearsal, and I cherished digging into her complicated psyche. Additional items included are a Peer Review from Professor Robin Aronson, student response to my performance, and the review published in The Tuscaloosa News.
Peer Review from Professor Robin Aronson.
Student response to the performance.
